The over 4-km open border stretch with Bangladesh in Karimganj in southern Assam will be fenced soon, additional chief secretary, Home and Political department, Assam, Kumar Sanjay Krishna has assured, after visiting the Indo-Bangladesh border at Karimganj.
He also reviewed various problems of the border area at a meeting held at the International Trade Centre, Sutarkandi in Karimganj and took stock of the development works in the border area during his visit on June 19.
Holding a meeting with the district administration and senior officials of Border Security Force (BSF) after visiting the border area, the additional CS said 4.35 km open border will be fenced in Karimganj town.
The BSF officials asked the administration for construction of houses for the people residing inside the fenced areas. The officials asked the administration to implement anti-erosion scheme in riverine border area of Karimganj district.
The meeting also discussed the Elephant Corridor constructed at Indo-Bangladesh Border at Champabari of Karimganj district to facilitate smooth movement of elephants between India and Bangladesh. The ‘high-mast light’ was fitted in the corridor to check human infiltration through it.
Earlier, Kumar Sanjay Krishna visited the zero point at border in Sutarkandi with BSF officials and Karimganj Deputy Commissioner MS Manivannan.
He was briefed about a smart fencing measuring 3 km completed in Latitila, the disputed place which was demarcated a few years back.
The BSF officials stressed on the need of shifting a cremation ground at Cherakuri area of the district. They also emphasised on shifting of people residing inside the fenced area in the Border. The BSF also requested to expedite the work of ‘High Power Line’ executed by APDCL in the district.
The additional chief secretary was also apprised that due to strict vigils at the Border, infiltration and smuggling have come down to a large extent. Around 25 cattle seized from the smugglers are in the custody of BSF in the last three months.
