The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has requested the Arunachal Pradesh government to enact laws for compulsory registrations of marriages in the state.

In a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein at Itanagar on July 7, the APSCW members urged the state government to takes necessary steps to protect the interests of the women in the state and protect them from domestic violence.

The delegation, led by Chairperson Radhilu Chai Techi, also requested Mein to install CCTVs at prime locations in Itanagar and Naharlagun to ensure women’s safety.

The members exuded hope that women-sensitive issues and welfare measures would be taken up by the government and readdress the various issues and challenges confronting the commission.

The APSCW chairperson informed that as the commission itself is independent and functions in a quasi-judicial capacity, having the powers of a civil court in matters relating to evidence, most complaints and cases that comes to the commission are related to marriages and domestic violence. Techi urged the government to formulate feasible act to tackle the situation.

The members expressed grave concern over the continuous rise of menace of drug-addiction amongst the youths of the state. They said that the commission had raised the issue to Chief Minister Pema Khandu recently where they have requested him to keep provisions in the budget for establishment of drug rehabilitation centres and juvenile observation homes with proper facilities and manpower in the state.

The commission discussed on 33% reservation in jobs and assembly for womenfolk of the state, which if materializes, they said would be one of the greatest achievements of the Khandu-led government.

The deputy chief minister while acknowledging the proactive role played by the commission assured to look into their demands placed before him and also assured to resolve all in phased manner after discussion and consultation with the chief minister and cabinet colleagues.

Other commission members present in the meeting were Vice Chairperson Heyomai Towsik, Yame Higio, Hoksum Ori, Likha Joya and Techi Hunmai.
