Assam Floods july21 – The News Mill

Even though the overall flood situation in Assam continued to improve, the death toll has been mounting with 12 deaths in last 24 hours taking the total count to 62 on July 20 evening.

Out of the 12 casualties since July 19, five were reported from Morigaon district and three from Barpeta, taking the total toll to 62, including two in landslides.

The overall situation improved marginally with 24 districts still under water.  Over 44 lakh people were still affected by the floods, with 1.31 lakh people taking shelter in 689 relief camps.

Among the major rivers still flowing over the danger level are Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat), Goalpara and Dhubri; Dhansiri (S) at Numaligarh (Golaghat) and Kopili at Dharamtul (Nagaon).

Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi on July 20 made an aerial survey of Kamrup, Goalpara, South Salmara and Dhubri districts.  Several senior officials, including the commissioner, lower Assam Division, and the additional secretary, revenue and DM department, accompanied him. The governor met camp inmates of three Relief Camps in Gouripur and Dhubri and instructed district officials to render all possible help to the flood affected people.
