Creating a world record in public auction of tea, a line of Maijan Golden Tea tips was sold for Rs 70,501 per kg at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) in Guwahati on July 31.

The Maijan Golden Tips, produced in the gardens of Assam Company India Ltd, broke a day-old auction record set by Manohari Golden Tea, which had fetched Rs 50,000 per kg at GTAC on July 30.

Commenting on the high price fetched by the speciality teas, Dinesh Bihani, secretary, Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association (GTABA), said it was a welcome trend.

He said, “It is unbelievable that Maijan Golden Tips has been sold for Rs 70,501, creating world record for any public auction. Teas are sold for a price even more than this, but they are sold through private negotiation. It shows that buyers are ready to buy good quality tea at any price”.

Mundhra tea Company of Guwahati purchased the tea from the Maijan Tea Estate which will be shared between Steven Plaizier from Belgium and an online tea store based in Guwahati- Namah Marketing.

“Now GTABA hopes that more producers will make such type of tea and once again make India one of the best quality Tea producing countries,” he added.
