The overall flood situation in Assam remained grim, with vast tracts of land still underwater and over 50 lakh population affected, with the death toll also continuing to increase.
Nine deaths in floods were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to 39, including two in landslides, so far on July 18 evening.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority sources said that the number of affected districts currently stands at 28. No reports of fresh inundation have been received on July 18.
More than 53.52 lakh population continue to be affected by the floods, though this figure showed a declining trend for the first time in this second wave of flood this year. Over 2.25 lakh people were still taking shelter in 689 relief camps and another 391 relief distribution centres also operational.
The water level of most of the major rivers were still flowing over the danger level, including the Brahmaputra at five places.
Meanwhile, state Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma chaired a video conference with deputy commissioners of all districts on July 18. He directed all officials to ensure that all relief reaches the affected people, including those marooned or in periphery areas.
The minister laid emphasis on ensuring providing baby food to the flood-affected population. He also asked the officials to prepare a comprehensive report of damages caused for onward submission.
