Tiger takes shelter on a bed in flood-hit Kaziranga

Tiger at Kaziranga National Park – The News Mill

A Royal Bengal tiger strayed out of the flood-hit Kaziranga National Park and made its way into a shop dealing with scrap on July 18 morning.

The fully-grown tiger found refuge on a bed at the shop, the photograph of which went viral on the social media. The incident was captured on camera at Harmoti alongside National Highway 37 which passes through the national park in Assam.

The animal is apparently tired and hungry after battling the flood.

Rifiqul Islam, the shop owner, said that he got alarmed on hearing screams of people. “When I heard people scream, I rushed out. I saw the tiger entering my shop from the front gate. He also saw me but didn’t attack me. It is now sleeping on a bed in the shop,” he said.

Forest guards have cordoned off the area.  They said that they would try to tranquillize the animal.

In the wake of the flood, the tiger first moved towards the hills across the highway in nearby Karbi Anglong district.

The picture was shared by WTI and their vet Dr. Shamshul Ali who were trying to tranquilize the tiger.

Over 90 per cent of the world heritage site is still under water. As many as 169 forest camps in the national park are still under water.

Among the wild animals, four rhinos, seven hog deer, three wild boar, one elephant and one sambar were drowned in flood waters in the park.

On the other hand, 10 hog deer and one sambar died after they were hit by vehicles on NH37 (new NH715) which passes through the Kaziranga National Park. The wild animals were forced to cross the road to seek shelter in the neighbouring hill areas in Karbi Anglong district.
