IIT Guwahati’s annual techno-management festival, Techniche is hosting this year’s edition of Guwahati Half Marathon on August 25 to raise awareness on clean and safe drinking water.

The Guwahati Half Marathon is an annual public awareness initiative event organised by Techniche. It is Northeast’s largest student-organised half marathon which is being organised since 2009. Guwahati Half Marathon has become an integral part of Techniche. This year, the 11th edition of the Guwahati Half Marathon is aimed at arousing awareness towards the importance of clean and safe drinking water.

“There is a huge water shortage problem in various parts of the world, including India. There are certain parts in the country where water might be accessible, but is contaminated with chemicals like arsenic and other impurities, rendering it undrinkable. This year, the Guwahati Half Marathon has partnered up with Piramal Sarvajal to contribute towards the cause of cleaning water sources. For every registration, we will be contributing a certain amount of the registration fee towards building water ATMs,” said Suraj Shelke, Convener of Techniche 2019.

The marathon is subdivided into three events. The Spirit Run is an open-to-all 6 km racing event. There is no age restriction. Anyone can participate in the event. There would be separate categories and thus, separate prize money for men and women. Registration is free of cost.

The Glory Run is the only 21 km racing event in Northeast India. Anyone above 14 years of age can participate in this event. The registration fee is Rs 400. There will be separate race categories and separate prizes for men and women.

The Courage Run is a 6 km racing event for the specially-abled people.

The General Championship is an event exclusively for schools and colleges where they participate and battle it out for the General Championship trophy. The run would be in the Spirit Run category, i.e., 6 km. The points would be counted on the basis of total number of participants and the number of participants ending up in top 50.

One can register for all the events both online and offline. “The online portal is active and can be accessed from our website www.techniche.org/ghm. The offline registration desks are available at Keventers at Srinagar, GS Road and Emperor China near Assam State Zoo,” Suraj Shelke added.
