A 100-hour blockade against ONGC operations in Sivasagar district of Assam was launched on August 28 by All Assam Students Union (AASU) to protest the alleged privatisation of profit-making oil fields of the company.

Reports said that AASU members blocked entrances of ONGC operational areas in the district since 5 am. ONGC employees coming for work were reportedly forced to return by the protestors.

The blockade was called against the purported handing over of the profit-making Geleki oil field in Sivasagar to a private company. The AASU also alleged that ONGC has failed to reserve adequate posts for locals and engage in development activities near its areas of operation.

The blockade was, however, temporarily lifted in the evening following discussion with ONGC authorities and Sivasagar district administration, official sources said.
