CCTV video grab

Assam government on September 21 ordered an inquiry into the incident where an ACS officer was allegedly assaulted by a Superintendent of Police, video of which has gone viral in social media.

“In view of the videos going viral in the social media platforms regarding an incident of physical assault inflicted on an ACS Officer by the SP of Kokrajhar district, the state government has directed the Commissioner of Lower Assam Division to cause an inquiry to the alleged incident and submit a report within September 25,” a statement said.

CCTV video doing the rounds of social media showed Rajen Singh, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Kokrajhar district, seen allegedly assaulting executive magistrate Sailen Das inside a hotel complex.

The incident happened on the intervening night of September 9 and 10 but the CCTV footage was made public only recently by prominent RTI activist Dulal Bora.

A compilation of footage sourced from various CCTV cameras installed inside the hotel shows Singh allegedly dragging out Das from inside the hotel and slapping him in the parking lot in the presence of several people, including security personnel.
