Former Tripura CM Biplab Deb

Tripura government has decided to move Supreme Court against stopping sacrifice of animals in temples across the state.

Law minister Ratan Lal Nath on September 30 said the Tripura High Court judgment has evoked mixed response and as the issue is very sensitive and controversial, the state government has decided to approach the apex court.

“We shall file SLP in the Supreme Court because the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act 1960 has also allowed sacrifice for religious cause, which is not violation of the Act,” Nath said.

There is a similar case of Himachal Pradesh pending in Supreme Court and the state government wants to get direction from apex court, he added.

However, till the SLP is filed, as per law the direction of high court will be in force and no sacrifice of animal will be carried out.

The Tripura High Court on September 27 asked the government to stop sacrifice of all animals in temples across the state.
