The four-day long incessant rains throughout Nagaland has caused floods in Dimapur district and the rainfall has claimed two lives in two separate incidents in Dimapur and Phek districts, which has also caused extensive damage in many parts of the state.
Official sources said that the teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Home Guard and Civil Defence retrieving one body of a woman below New Dansiri Bridge in Dimapur.
On the other hand, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of Phek district has reported of a retaining wall collapse at New Colony in Phek town, in which two persons were injured while one body was retrieved by SDRF and Home Guards & Civil Defence team on Saturday. The weather condition is due to the cyclonic Kyarr that occurring over the Bay of Bengal.
Sources said that the incessant rain caused floods of several locations in Dimapur on October 27 with houses located on the banks of the Dhansiri River were affected. As per the NSDMA, as many as 13 villages and urban localities were severely flooded.
Sources said some of the affected villages severely affected by the floods are Tuolazouma, Bade, Tsithrongse, Seluophe, Naharbari, Darogajan, Domokhia, Purana Bazaar B, Purana Bazaar Model Colony, Khushiabil, Siethekema Basa, Thahekhu, Imkonglenden, Kuhuboto, Khopanala, Sangtamtila and Urra Colony.
Four houses at Sangtamtila were swept away by the floodwaters. According to the report of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Nagaland received a total rainfall of 809.75 mm (during the last 36 hours) recorded as per NSDMA weather system on the 26th October 2019 which caused flood situation in the lowland districts especially Dimapur.
Meanwhile, Nagaland chief minister and Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) chairman Neiphiu Rio, along with NSDMA adviser Kazheto Kinimi, with Dimapur deputy commissioner Kevekha Kevin Zehol and Chumukedima EAC Thejavizo Nakhro and other officials, visited the flood-affected areas, including Naharbari, Darogajan and Ekhyo Yan in Dimapur district to assess the situation on October 27.
The CM handed over Rs 10 lakh to Dimapur DC for providing immediate relief in the affected areas, besides directing the latter to take other necessary steps.
The Army and Assam Rifles personnel also swung into the action of rescue operations in Dimapur district as a humanitarian gesture. According to a Defence release issued by Defence PRO Lt Col Sumit Sharma on October 28 informed that the residents of Domokhia village found their houses submerged in knee-deep waters. The rains continue to lash the higher reaches of the state, thus making the flood situation even more precarious.
