The first-ever edition of North East Super 6, a six-a-side football tournament, will be hosted across nine cities in the Northeast from October 25. The tournament will be held in collaboration with Indian Super League club NorthEast United FC.

The organizers of the tournament informed that 32 teams will be playing in each city, across the Northeast. The winning teams from each of the cities will play at the finals in Guwahati.

A player above 16 years of age is eligible for participation. “Six players of each team will take the field and four rolling substitutes would be allowed. The duration of each match would be 20 minutes,” the organizers informed.

The winner of the tournament will receive a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a trophy.

Former India captain Renedy Singh, who was present to unveil the jersey and trophy of NES6 in Guwahati on October 24, said that it is a praiseworthy initiative to promote football.

“Northeast has always been a hub of sports, especially football. This initiative will further motivate the youth to engage more in football. A tournament like this brings a great opportunity for young footballers to stay in form and prepare themselves for national and international-level participation. It is great to see esteemed brands like Asian Paints come forward to support the game in Northeast,” said Renedy who donned the colours of some of the top clubs of the country during his playing days.

Renedy further said that playing six-a-side games in smaller grounds will also help the players to develop their techniques.

Keeping up the spirit to support India’s budding sports talent, Asian Paints has come on board as the main sponsor of the first-ever edition of North East Super 6 along with Ceat Tyres as the associate sponsor.

Speaking on the association of NorthEast United FC with the tournament, general manager Ashley Pinto said, “It is such a proud moment to be associated with Asian Paints in its endeavour to promote and encourage sports in smaller towns and cities. Northeast has immense love for football and it was evident in the overwhelming response and registrations this tournament received across the states. It is encouraging to see such leading brands of the country offering a platform for upcoming players to get noticed and chart out a future for themselves in the sport.”
