A student from Japan was found dead inside a hostel room at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati on Thursday.

The student was an intern at the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at IIT Guwahati under an India-Japan exchange programme. An IIT Guwahati release on November 22 said that police have launched investigations into the death and once the probe is complete, further details will be shared.

The Japanese embassy has also been informed by IIT Guwahati regarding the matter.

A top official of IIT Guwahati informed that when some friends of the student tried to contact him, they found that his mobile phone was switched off. They later found the body of the student in his hostel room.

North Guwahati Circle Officer Pranab Dutta Goswami said that, “We have received information that, a student from Japan was found dead inside his hostel room. Immediately a police team reached the spot and recovered the body from the room. We have suspected that, the student had committed suicide.”

“We have conducted our preliminary inquiry procedure and the body has been sent for post-mortem,” Goswami said.

He further said that, no suicide note was found from the student’s room.
