Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma

The Meghalaya Cabinet on December 10 decided to meet Home Minister Amit over the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019, which was passed in Lok Sabha on Monday.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who chaired the Cabinet meeting, said that government will approach Governor Tathagata Roy to give his assent on the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) Ordinance, 2019, which was approved on November 1.

“We have also decided to meet Home Minister Amit Shah to urge that more strong measures in different forms measures to counter influx and also to protect our people as whole can be taken up for Meghalaya,” Sangma said.

On lone National People’s Party (NPP) Lok Sabha member Agatha Sangma supporting the passage of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, Conrad Sangma, who is also the NPP national president said, “She felt that adequate measures have been taken to protect the interest of the indigenous people of the region in the current bill.”

“We have felt that the government has taken the concerns of the Northeast seriously, they have put in all these provisions that are going to insulate to a large extent large part of the region. So keeping these factors in mind we feel that government has done its part in addressing a lot of concerns,” the chief minister added.

However, Sangma said that the state government has been very clear that it wants more provisions to ensure that more insulation is done.

“It need not be done along with this bill but that it can be done in many ways which government of India can give more protection to the people of Meghalaya and the Northeast,” Sangma said.
