Assam filmmaker Rima Das invited as jury for Berlinale

Rima Das of Village Rockstars fame has been invited as one of the jury members of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) to be held from February 20 this year.

She will be the international jury member of the Generation 14plus segment. This is being touted as a huge boost for film fraternity not just in Assam but of the country.

“Being on the jury of Berlin International film festival is a huge honour and responsibility. I feel blessed that I have got this opportunity at an early stage in my journey. It’s only last year that Bulbul Can Sing was part of Generation 14 Plus. This is even more special since generation section showcases films for children and youth, which are very close to my heart. I hope more filmmakers in India as well are inspired to make films for children and youth,” an elated Rima said after the development.

The other two members in this segment are Iranian Abbas Amini and Jenna Bass of South Africa.

The Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus, two competition programmes that screen state-of-the-art international cinema for young audiences and for everyone else.

The Grand Prix of the Generation 14plus International Jury for the Best Film, endowed with € 7,500 by the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Agency for Civic Education). The Special Prize of the Generation 14plus International Jury for the Best Short Film, endowed with € 2,500 by the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (Federal Agency for Civic Education).

The award ceremony for the Generation 14plus competition will take place on February 28 in the Urania.

After her grand success with Village Rockstars which was also the India’s official entry for the Oscars last year Rima has become a household name in the festivals across the globe.

“As a self-taught cinematic all-rounder and as an advocate for gender equality, Rima Das was recognised by GQ India as one of the ‘Most Influential Young Indians 2018’. Her film Village Rockstars premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2017 and subsequently received the Indian Film Award. With Bulbul Can Sing, for which she was responsible for the script, direction, camera, montage, production design and production, she was a guest at Generation 14plus last year and received a Special Mention from the 14plus International Jury,” the festival website said.
