Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on February 11 evening reshuffled the portfolios of four ministers following the growing demand from his council of ministers for relieving his elder brother James Sangma from the Home (Police) Department.

The reshuffle of portfolios came after the members of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) -led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government demanded for stripping off the home portfolio from James in the wake of alleged illegal transportation of coal in the state.

In fact, the Meghalaya Lokayukta had ordered a CBI probe into the alleged illegal transportation of coal.

Home (Police), James, the senior NPP legislator has been relieved from Home (Jails), Home (Passport) and District Council Affairs.

However, the CM has allotted taxation besides Information and Public Relations to James besides retaining Food Civil Supplies and Consumers Affairs, Power.

Education Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) legislator, Lahkmen Rymbui, has been given the additional charge of Home (Police). He will also continue to look after Forest and Environment, Border Area Development which were earlier allotted to him.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party legislator, Alexander Laloo Hek, who has been relieved from Information and Public Relations, has now been allocated Home (Jails), Home (Passport) but retained Health and Family Welfare department besides Arts and Culture.

People’s Democratic Front legislator and Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling, has been given an additional task to look after District Council Affairs. He will also continue to look after Information Technology and Municipal Administration.
