Border Security Force jawans posted in Sonamura under Sepahijala district of Tripura on February 16 recovered dry cannabis worth of Rs 1.63 crore from dense forest near Indo-Bangladesh border.

Acting on a specific intelligence input regarding stocking and cultivation of cannabis in Ghatighar forest area of Anandpur under Sonamura, BSF jawans along with Sub Divisional Forest Officer and Forest Protection Guards conducted a search in the suspected forest area.

The BSF claimed that the drug smugglers managed to escape into dense forest, however, during raid as many as 18 plastic drums and nine polythene bags containing 889 Kg of dry cannabis leaf was found concealed at three different places where as many as eight motorcycles had also been found abandoned.

The security forces also burnt down about 4500 mature cannabis plants, which were spread over three hectares of forestland. Besides, on the intervening night of February 15-16, BSF troops also succeeded in seizing other contraband items worth of Rs 89,098.
