The Assam government is constructing temporary facilities for quarantine of suspected COVID 19 cases, while it will also be training final year MBBS and nursing students for COVID 19 treatment protocol to deal with any eventuality caused by the pandemic in the state.

Addressing a press conference after reviewing progress of construction of a quarantine facility at Sarusajai sports complex in Guwahati, state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “This 1000 capacity quarantine facility will be ready within one week. It will be used to keep family members of patients who test positive for COVID 19”.

Moreover, another 1000-bedded facility could be constructed at Nehru Stadium in Guwahati, while four other hospitals with 300 capacity each are being converted into COVID 19 treatment facilities, besides the government medical colleges and hospitals being made dedicated COVID 19 facilities, the minister said.

He further informed that talks are on with L&T for construction of a few temporary COVID 19 dedicated hospitals with life span of four years, and said the government could take people’s assistance for the purpose if the project comes through.

“People are offering monetary assistance to the government. We want to tell them that we have the funds for the Health part as of now. If the construction happens, we could need assistance and then, we will approach the people,” Sarma said.

“As of now, there are no positive COVID 19 cases in the state,” he added.

The minister further informed that training module for about 700 MBBS students in final year and 2000 students in final year of nursing has been prepared and they will be trained to deal with COVID 19 from March 26.

The department is also fast-tracking appointing of 300-400 ward boys and girls who have already completed all recruitment process and only declaration of result was awaited to enlist more manpower, he said.

Dr Sarma said doctors from the state who have trained outside or are working in private sector here have volunteered to help the government, while the private hospitals in the state are also ready to enlist their young doctors for government work if the situation demands.
