Curfew has been lifted in Meghalaya’s capital Shillong on March 8 in view of the improvement in the law and order situation, an official said.
However, she said that curfew in Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and Shella is yet to be lifted fully.
“The situation is back to normalcy in Shillong. Therefore, we have decided to lift the curfew but we are keeping a close watch to ensure that there is no breach of security,” said District Magistrate of East Khasi hills district, Matsiewdor War Nongbri.
Nongbri said the district administration is still assessing the situation at Sohra and Shella.
Shillong had witnessed violence in past one week following clashes between the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) activists and non-tribals after the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act meeting at Ichamati village on February 28.
KSU member Lurshai Hynniewta, 35, of Sohra, had succumbed to his injuries following the clash.
Police have arrested eight persons have in connection with the case.
The death toll in the clashes rose to three after two persons were killed by unidentified people. Several people were injured in the stabbing spree incident at Iewduh market, the main market in Shillong. More than 200 migrant labourers, mostly from Assam have left Ichamati village following the clashes.
