Maharashtra Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray on April 7 assured Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma that necessary action would be taken against an unidentified biker spat on a Manipuri woman at Kalina in Mumbai on April 6.
After his telephonic conversation with Thackeray, Sangma tweeted, “Spoke to @AUThackeray ji, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Govt of Maharashtra regarding the incident in Kalina, Mumbai where some unknown miscreants spat on a Manipuri girl”.”
“He (Thackeray) has assured the protection of our NE people and he will take necessary action against this act of racism,” the Chief Minister added.
Following the barbaric act, the 25-year-old woman lodged an FIR against the biker.
A similar incident had also occurred in North-West Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar area when a 40-year-old man allegedly spat on a 25-year-old Manipuri girl.
Later, Delhi Police arrested the accused. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident at Kalina.
“Yet another case of racial discrimination amid #COVID19outbreak, a miscreant spat on a northeastern girl at Kalina Market area in Mumbai. NCW will look into this matter for appropriate action,” the NCW tweeted even as it termed the incident a ‘racial discrimination’ amid COVID-19 outbreak.
The Ministry of Home Affairs wrote to all States and Union Territories, asking them to take appropriate action against those who are harassing people from the northeast by linking them with COVID-19.
