Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Assam Police has helped in delivery of medicines to 4,800 people in the state during the nationwide lockdown to contain COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on April 24, Sarma said that thanks to the Assam Police, people are getting supply of necessary medicines which are not available at local medical stores. “I must thank the Assam Police for helping facilitate delivery of these medicines. Along with their regular duties, they are serving the mankind with this initiative,” Sarma said.

The Assam minister further announced that the state government is starting a home delivery service for medicines across the state. Called the ‘Dhanwantari scheme’, one can now contact at helpline number 104 if they are unable to get prescribed medicines at their nearby medical stores. “Once 104 helpline gets the call, they will ask the person to send the prescription through WhatsApp. The medicine will be delivered by ASHA workers and will be free of cost if they are available at the government pharmacies or if the cost is less than Rs 200,” Sarma said.

He added that for medicines procured from Guwahati or Dibrugarh, the delivery will be attempted within 48 hours.

The move comes at a time when many people are knocking on the minister’s social media accounts for help in delivery of medicines.
