The Shillong doctor, who was diagnosed with COVID-19 on April 13, died early morning on April 15. He was 69.
This was the first COVID-19 case reported in Meghalaya and also the first loss of life due to COVID-19 in the state.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma confirmed the news on Twitter at 8:46 am. “I am deeply saddened to inform that the first #COVID19 positive patient in Meghalaya passed away this morning at 2:45 am. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace,” he tweeted.
Earlier, Tripura’s royal scion Pradyot Manikya Debbarma tweeted: “We knew Dr Sailo for over 30 years and his passing away within days has indeed shocked many of us . He was a good man who did his best for his patients. RIP Dr Sailo you will be missed.”
Shillong-based senior journalist Patricia Mukhim also wrote about the loss. “Woke up to the devastating news of the passing away of Dr Sailo at 2.30 am this morning. He was a doctor trusted by many and he has healed many..May he find rest on the other side,” she wrote on Facebook.
The Meghalaya government had called all people to report to helpline numbers 108 and 1070 immediately if they have visited the Bethany Hospital in Shillong on or after March 22 and also the Bethany Hospital in Nongpoh on or after March 30.
