Opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) spokesperson MK Subba on April 5 reiterated the party’s demand for setting up a COVID-19 testing laboratory in Sikkim.

Asserting that a COVID-19 laboratory is a must for Sikkim, Subba said: “The process of establishing laboratories should be completed on war footing.”

He also expressed dissatisfaction over ruling government not convening all-party meet to discuss the pandemic. Subba suggested the state government to form a medical committee of serving, retired and private doctors for expert advice during the current situation around.

He also stressed on economic relief for the lower section of the society, including loans.

However, the state government has already committed that a lab will be soon started in new government hospital in Gangtok.

“Fifty per cent of the job has been done, only some work left. We will start the laboratory here, we have option to start it at Namchi South. In the meantime, Alkem Laboratories, a supplier of pharmaceutical medicines, is ready to provide the facility,” said Principal Secretary K Sreenivasulu updating on COVID-19 preparedness in Sikkim.
