Floods West Garo Hills district – The News Mill

More than 1600 people on May 24 were rendered homeless after villages were submerged in flash floods following a cloudburst in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district, an official said.

“Preliminary reports from the flood-affected areas of the district suggested that around 1,630 people have rendered homeless due to the flood and are currently taking shelter in government relief camps,” District Magistrate Ram Singh told UNI over phone.

No loss of life has been reported so far from these areas.

Five relief camps have been set up to accommodate the displaced people in Raksmagre area, he said, adding that some of the affected people have chosen to stay with the relatives in the upper region.

He further said road communication in those inundated areas remained cut off after three bridges, including two wooden bridges and a concrete bridge have been washed away by the high current of the water.

“The Holaidonga road between Phulbari and Tikrikilla has been submerged under water with light vehicles finding difficult to drive,” Singh stated adding that Chibinang road also waterlogged, but vehicles can pass through with difficulty.

“We could send gratuity relief to only three camps as roads are inundated at various places on Sunday. The gratuity relief to the other two areas will be delivered on Monday,” Singh further stated.

Meanwhile, the district magistrate has advised people to avoid travelling to those areas until further orders.

Heavy rainfall following cloudburst on May 23 night wreaked havoc in Raksamgre and Tikrikilla areas causing flash floods with most the houses, market places, educational institutions and agricultural lands submerged with water.

Didak river flowing through Raksamgre and Photamati and Ghagua river flowing through Tikrikilla is flowing above the danger mark leading to many areas under the town, nearby Nidanpur and Raksamgre were inundated.
