Assam on May 25 registered its first three-digit single-day spike in new COVID-19 cases as 156 more patients have been detected, taking the overall tally to 548.

State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed of the new cases through Twitter.

Golaghat has reported the highest number of cases on May 25 with 59 cases from the district. While 21 have been reported from Karimganj, 17 from Lakhimpur, nine from Barpeta, eight from Guwahati quarantine centre and seven from Kamrup (Metro).

Six have been confirmed from Kokrajhar, five each from Cachar and Sivasagar, four from Hailakandi, and three from South Salmara.

Four cases were detected in Dhemaji, which was the lone district in the state without a single COVID-19 case till May 24.

Two more cases have been found in Nalbari and Tinsukia, while one each in Jorhat. Morigaon, Goalpara and Nagaon.

On the other hand, five patients have recovered in the state on May 25, taking the number of discharged patients to 62.

Meanwhile, reacting to apprehensions that the infection was spreading within the quarantine centres, Sarma claimed that samples are taken before a person is sent to quarantine.

The state has been recording major spike in new cases, with the previous biggest increase of 87 new cases in a single-day reported on May 23, while 46 new cases were reported on May 24.

The total number of cases now stands at 548, of which 62 have recovered and four have died so far.
