With six new cases detected for COVID-19, including a student of the Regional Dental College in Guwahati, the total tally in Assam rose to 59 on May 8.

According to health sources, five persons from Silchar in Cachar district were reported to be COVID-19 positive during the day, while the sixth patient was detected late in the evening.

The Silchar patients were part of a group that has returned in a bus from Ajmer in Rajasthan and reached Silchar two days ago.

Five other passengers of the bus have already tested positive for the virus.

The Regional Dental College student case comes a day after a junior doctor of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), situated alongside the dental college in Guwahati, was detected positive.

The number of COVID 19 positive cases in the state now stands at 59, of whom 24 were active cases, the sources added.
