A couple illegally crossed the India-Bangladesh international border and came to Tripura on May 17 from a COVID-19 affected area in the neighbouring country without being detected by the Border Security Force (BSF). The incident came to light on May 20 when villagers informed about the couple to the local administration.

The couple from bordering Harimangal village panchayat had gone to woman’s paternal home at Khagracharri in Bangladesh. After residing there for more than two months, they returned to India allegedly through the unfenced border at Chaplingchara on May 17.

After receiving information, Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Gandacharra, Dashiram Riang and the OC of the local police station reached the spot and instructed the couple to go under home quarantine.

The incident led to speculations on how several BSF troopers in the state may have contacted the virus causing COVID-19.

Commanding Officer of 164th Battalion of BSF completely denied their responsibility stating that the area is not under their jurisdiction.
