Hundreds in Assam have been affected in the second day of first floods of the season following continuous rainfall and the release of dam water.
A bulletin by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on May 23 evening said that the floods have hit 2980 people of Kalgachia revenue circle in Barpeta district and North Lakhimpur revenue circle in Assam.
Cyclone Amphan, after wreaking havoc in West Bengal and Odisha, has been lashing the state with heavy rainfall since May 20 evening. As a result, many rivers in the state are overflowing. Moreover, release of water by Kurichu dam in neighbouring Bhutan and Neepco’s Ranganadi project in the state has worsened the situation.
The water level in the Beki river has receded on May 23 after it was flowing 2.31 meter above its danger level on May 22. The Brahmaputra also continued to flow above the danger level in Barpeta district, the Puthimari in Kamrup and the Jia Bharali in Sonitpur district. Noona in Nalbari district is also flowing above the danger level.
The meteorological office has warned of rain over the next 24 hours in Assam and its neighbouring states.
