Meghalaya Police has filed an FIR against an Assam-based news channel for broadcasting that a minister in the state has tested positive for COVID-19, a police official said on May 16.

“A case vise cyber crime police station case no. 125 (5) 2020 under relevant sections of Disaster Management Act and Indian Penal Code has been registered against Pratidin News channel for broadcasting the fake news,” Meghalaya police spokesperson Gabriel Iangrai said.

On May 15, the channel reportedly ran this news repeatedly and the report has created panic in Meghalaya.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has termed the news as “totally false, fabricated and unfounded.”

He said an investigation is being conducted to determine the source/s for such fake news.
