A person, undergoing mandatory quarantine at Rabongla in South Sikkim, was tested positive for COVID-19 on May 23. This is the first COVID-19 case detected in the state.

The 25-year-old man had returned from Delhi recently and was in quarantine. He travelled in a bus with 11 others, including the driver, on the way back, sources said. He returned to the state on May 19. He reached Rabongla via Melli checkpost. He showed symptoms like fever on May 21 at the quarantine centre where he had been isolated, after which doctor sent him to South District Hospital in Namchi.

According to Health Secretary Pempa Bhutia, all the co-travelers will also be tested.

After the Trunat test in Gangtok revealed he was COVID-19 positive, his test sample was forwarded to North Bengal Medical College Hospital in Siliguri where the infection was confirmed.

Reports said that the personnel posted at Rangpo check post would also be tested.
