A woman from West Sikkim died on her way back to the state from Gujarat.
According to reports, she fell sick in train and was admitted to Katni hospital in Madhya Pradesh but died later. Her last rites were held in Jabalpur.
The woman has been identified as Chandra Subba. She boarded the train at Vadodara on May 15 accompanied by her sister and other Sikkimese co-travellers.
Rinzing Chewang Bhutia, Secretary Coordination (COVID-19) cum State Nodal Officer, Evacuation said her initial diagnosis indicated dengue, but the report of test conducted for Coronavirus infection, is awaited.
She worked in a private company and was stranded due to Coronavirus lockdown.
Chief Minister PS Tamang expressing sorrow said he was extremely sad to know about the untimely demise of Chandra Subba of Dentam in West Sikkim.
“Her last rites were conducted under the presence of sub-divisional magistrate Jabalpur,” CM said and thanked the Madhya Pradesh government “for lending their support in the hour of need.”
The chief minister has announced a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh each for her daughter and son.
Secretary to CM, SD Dhakal has disclosed that “on being informed of her sickness, a sum of Rs 40,000 was immediately transferred to her account as per directions of CM on May 16 for her treatment.”
“She was referred for advanced treatment at Jabalpur but expired on the way,” he said.
“SDM of Jabalpur Ashish Pandey performed her last rites like an elder brother,” Dhakal said adding that the deceased woman’s sister also developed sickness and has been hospitalized.
“Once she recovers, she will be given the option to return home or go back to Gujarat,” he stated.
