Left-backed workers’ organization, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), on June 20 demanded to ensure job and adequate livelihood support to the migrant people who have returned to Tripura due to outbreak of coronavirus and nationwide shut down.
CITU president and former transport minister Manik Dey alleged that maximum migrant labourers returned home on their own cost and sought to claim lapses on the part of government in managing the migrant crisis.
“The emergence of migrant crisis in the country is a direct fall out of the unplanned and wrong design of the nationwide lockdown,” he said.
“The nationwide lockdown has been imposed abruptly without considering the probable problems pertaining to migrant workers. In Tripura also, the migrants who have returned or gone out of the state faced serious financial crisis and whatever little have been provided by the government has not reached to them,” Dey added.
“The migrant labourers or those who were stuck somewhere in the country were forced to stay under the open sky or in some crowded locations as they were driven out of their residences due to dried up resources. Thus, a good number of them had fallen prey to COVID-19 and the results were now before all,” Dey claimed.
He said that now the duty of the government was to give them proper livelihood opportunities and other welfare schemes to lighten the sudden economic burden on them.
