After a team of Assam Police returned empty handed from Kolkata, a court in Guwahati on June 24 issued a fresh warrant for the arrest of Kolkata-based political commentator Garga Chatterjee over his purported derogatory remarks against Ahom dynasty founder Chaolung Sukaphaa.
A top Guwahati Police official said that the police had filed a petition before the sub-divisional magistrate in Guwahati for warrant for arresting Chatterjee.
Based on it, a new warrant has been issued by the court, directing the Kolkata commissioner of police to arrest the accused (Chatterjee).
A team of Guwahati Police had gone to Kolkata last week to apprehend Chatterjee, but had to return empty handed as their counterparts at Kolkata reportedly refused to cooperate with the Guwahati delegation.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had ordered immediate arrest of Chatterjee on June 19 over his purported derogatory remarks against Chaolung Sukaphaa.
Chatterjee had made the purported remarks on Twitter, where he had termed Chaolung Sukaphaa as a Chinese invader and went on to add that the BJP-ruled state commemorates the founding of the Ahom dynasty by celebrating it as state day.
He also took on the separatist group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), alleging it to be a China-funded outfit which also considers Chaolung Sukaphaa as a hero.
