The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has ordered the state chief secretary and the IGP (Prisons) to conduct an enquiry into allegations of non-compliance of COVID-19 protocol at Guwahati Central Jail and other prisons in the state.

The commission took cognizance of a complaint made by Leader of the Opposition in Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia alleging gross negligence in providing necessary healthcare and diet to the inmates of Guwahati Central Jail and other jails of Assam, along with general non-compliance with COVID-19 protocol.

The AHRC has ordered the enquiry and asked for submission of report in this connection to the commission on or before August 5.

The order was passed on July 20 by Justice T Vaiphei, chairperson of the commission, and members Naba Kamal Bora and Deva Kumar Saikia.

More than 300 inmates of Guwahati Central Jail have been detected with COVID-19 so far, with the entire jail premise being now turned into a COVID hospital for treatment of the new cases.
