Assam flood situation remains grim; toll reaches 76

The death toll in Assam flood continued to increase as five deaths were reported on July 17, while the overall situation remained grim as 28 districts out of total 33 remained under waters.

The five deaths since July 16 evening has pushed the death toll to 76, an Assam State Disaster Management Authority bulletin informed on July 17 evening.

The number of affected population decreased marginally from nearly 40 lakh last evening (July 16) to come down to 35,75,832 this evening.

However, the number of affected districts has increased by one since July 16 and 28 districts currently remain affected, in which 88 revenue circles and 3014 villages and localities were hit.

The number of displaced people taking shelter in relief camps has crossed 50,000, with 304 relief camps sheltering them.

Additionally, 407 relief distribution centres were operational in the state.

As many as seven major rivers of the state were in spate, including the Brahmaputra in five places and the Barak in two places.

Over 2,300 stranded people have been evacuated from different parts by civil administration with assistance of SDRF and local people.

Personnel of NDRF and SDRF have been deployed at different locations to carry out rescue and relief operations.

The Kaziranga National Park and Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park also remained affected, with vast tract submerged.
