England’s popular football club, Arsenal, has come up with a meme in Assamese to show its solidarity with the flood-affected state.
Arsenal’s Instagram handle on July 17 uploaded a five second video with the texts ‘We are with you’ and also in Assamese ‘Aami Aaso Apunalokor Logot’.
In the post the popular football club wrote, “Stay Strong, Assam”.
This has created a buzz among the fans of the club in India and especially in the region.
“It made my day, when I got to see the post. I’m so happy. I have been an Arsenal supporter since my childhood and today I’m proud of it,” Arijit, a 37-year-old fan of the club told The News Mill.
Arjit said that the gesture of the club is commanding. “This will help in sending the message across. When the central government has not given us due importance during the flood, the gesture of the club is really praiseworthy,” he added.
Arsenal, nicknamed as Gunners, has a huge fan base in India and especially in the northeast region along with Liverpool, Chelsea and other English clubs.
Famous actor Adil Hussain shared the video link on Twitter and said that he was disappointed that “our celebrities, mainstream media, cricket stars” failed to raise their voices in support of the flood victims.
“Arsenal FC stands with Assamese people. I don’t understand why, then, our celebrities, mainstream media, cricket stars are not raising their voices in support of Assamese people! So disappointed with you all. Arsenal Football Club UK,” he tweeted.
India football captain Sunil Chhetri too took to Twitter to express his solidarity with the flood-affected people. “Along with the prayers, Assam needs as much attention and help as possible to recover from the floods it is under. There’s been considerable loss of life – both man and animal, and I can only sincerely hope that the numbers don’t rise. #AssamFloods,” he tweeted.
Assam is witnessing one of the worst floods this season with more than 37 lakh people are affected presently and the death toll has reached 72 since mid May.
