Former Assam cricketer Anwar Hussain Hazarika

Former Assam cricketer Anwar Hussain Hazarika, who represented the state in Ranji Trophy in the 1960s and 70s, passed away on July 6 in Jorhat.

Hazarika was 75 at the time of death. Family sources said that he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Hazarika was known for his solid batting during his heydays. He had the rare distinction of scoring a century in his debut match against Odisha at Cuttack where he scored 120 runs. He played 16 Ranji Trophy matches for Assam.

He also represented the East Zone team against Marylebone Cricket Club in 1973 at Jamshedpur. He was a known sports organiser too and was actively involved with Rajabari Club of Jorhat.

Apart from that, Hazarika used to work for differently-abled children and used to run a centre for them.

Assam Cricket Association (ACA), Veteran Cricket Association of Assam (VCAA), former and present cricketers, among others, have condoled the demise of Hazarika.

May the departed soul rest in eternal peace,” the ACA said in a statement.
