The Gauhati High Court on July 16 granted bail to Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi in three cases.
However, Gogoi – who is a COVID-19 patient and hospitalized at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati – will not be able to walk free out of jail as yet. He needs to get bail in two other cases including one case lodged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The RTI activist, who has been in jail for the last 8 months, recently tested positive for COVID-19 in Guwahati Central Jail.
Meanwhile, a total of 350 students from across the country have written to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal seeking immediate release of Akhil Gogoi.
The KMSS leader was arrested by the police and later the NIA for his alleged role in violent anti-CAA protests in December, 2019.
NIA arrested him under the amended Unlawful Assembly Prevention Act (UAPA).
