District authorities in East Khasi Hills said that they will file an additional FIR against remaining six persons who attended a wedding party at a resort in Guwahati allegedly for violating the COVID-19 protocols.

“We have received the additional report on the six persons from the Health and Family Welfare department who had attended the wedding party and we will be filing the FIR,” East Khasi Hills District Magistrate Matsiewdor War Nongbri said on July 15.

On July 13, 35 persons were booked for violating COVID-19 norms and attending a wedding feast at Khanapara in Assam.

The wedding feast took place at Greenwood Resort in Guwahati on June 27 and another reception was held in Shillong on July 2, following which two of the attendees were tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said that the police have already registered a case against the 35 persons named in the FIR who had attended the wedding party.

“We have identified those people (who attended the wedding party), their places of stay and once they complete the quarantine period we will start recording their statements and continue with our investigation,” Nongtnger further said.

Police have registered the case at Sadar Police Station under appropriate sections of The Disaster Management Act, Epidemic Diseases Act, and Meghalaya Epidemic Diseases Covid19 Regulations, 2020.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong urged the citizens of the state not to doubt the law since it is same for all.

“Action will be taken against them as per the law of the land,” Tynsong asserted.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya government on July 15 decided not to issue permission for wedding reception in two districts – Ri-Bhoi district and East Khasi Hills district.

This decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

“We have decided not to give permission for wedding receptions in Ri-Bhoi district and East Khasi Hills district in view of the surge of COVID-19 positive cases,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said.

He said that this would also apply to other feasts at home.

However Tynsong said solemnization of marriages in places of worship would be allowed with strict protocols.

So far, the total number of persons infected with COVID-19 in East Khasi Hills district is 261 while in Ri-Bhoi district is 22.
