Nagaland government on July 3 has banned the trade of dog meat in the state.

Nagaland Chief Secretary Temjen Toy informed that the state government has decided to ban commercial import and the sale of dog and dog meat.

“The state government has decided to ban commercial import and trading of dogs and dog markets and also the sale of dog meat – both cooked and uncooked,” the chief secretary tweeted on July 3.

He added that the decision was taken by the cabinet headed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.

Toy, in his tweet, also appreciated the decision taken by the state cabinet in this regard.

Earlier, the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisation (FIAPO) had urged the state government to immediately ban the slaughter of dogs and enforce animal welfare laws.

“We are writing with deep concern, shock and horror at recent images that have emerged from ‘animal bazaar’ markets in Dimapur where dogs are seen in terrified conditions, tied up in sacks, waiting at a wet market, for their illegal slaughter, trade and consumption as meat,” FIAPO legal manager Varnika Singh wrote to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in a letter.

On July 1, images circulating in the social media showed alleged torture on dogs at a village in Mokokchung district of Nagaland. Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, taking cognizance of the incident, had ordered a probe.

The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Mokokchung district has also expressed dismay at the recent cruel and inhuman ‘shoot-at-sight’ killing of dogs at Changki village in Mokokchung district on June 30.
