Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on July 29 visited erosion and flood-hit areas of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts.
Sonowal first visited the erosion-hit areas of Thekerajan in Lakhimpur district, perpetrated by Subansiri river.
He interacted with senior officers of Water Resources department and took stock of the measures taken by the department to mitigate the effects of erosion, and also directed them to take appropriate steps for reducing the menace of erosion.
The chief minister also visited Bhoj revenue village of Dhemaji district, interacted with the flood affected people and distributed relief materials among them.
Following incessant rain in the past few days the overflowing Jiadhal river has inundated at least 50 villages in the area.
He also visited the under-construction embankment site along the Kumotia river and took stock of the construction of the embankment.
Later, Sonowal visited erosion-hit areas of Dhakuakhana civil sub-division.
The erosion perpetrated by Charikaria river on the back side of Dhakuakhana College has posed a great deal of problem, as the chief minister visited the area, took stock of the situation and conceded that the government would take immediate steps to address the problem.
Talking to reporters, Sonowal said along with flood, soil erosion has posed a great deal of challenge and said he has been visiting several places of the state to take stock of the problems posed by flood and erosion.
He also said the erosion perpetrated by different rivers in Dhemaji has posed a great problem as local MLA and MP took the issue very seriously and the Water Resources department has pressed its men and materials to find a long standing and scientific solution to the problem.
Over 100 people have been killed in floods in the state this year so far.
