The Assam government plans to open special hospitals for COVID-19 positive pregnant women, children below 12 years and senior citizens above 65 years, in Guwahati from next week.
Informing this at a press conference in Guwahati on July 11, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We shall be having a special hospital exclusively for pregnant women and children below 12 years of age in an annexure of the MMC Hospital. Work is almost complete and we hope to open it on July 14.”
Playing facilities for the children, while all routine healthcare needed for pregnant women, including ultrasound facility, will be available, with the provision for performing Cesarean section at the MMCH, if needed, he added.
A similar dedicated hospital for senior citizens above 65 years of age would be opened at Khanapara the same day, the minister said.
“This would have also facilities for geriatric care, with round-the-clock doctors and specially assigned nurses,” he added.
Guwahati has been witnessing a spike in COVID-19 positive cases, leading to a two-week lockdown, which has been extended by another week from July 12.
