Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), led by Akhil Gogoi who has been behind bars since December, on August 22 announced the formation of a new regional political party that will contest next year’s Assembly polls in Assam.

After the preparations of All Assam Students Union (AASU) for a regional political force, the influential peasants’ body on August 22 declared the forming a new political party with jailed leader Akhil Gogoi as its chief ministerial candidate.

“We have prepared ourselves for a brand new regional political party. It will be a new start. It will cover all the people of the state from all the regions, language, caste, creed and religion. We have already completed our preparations in this regard. We have prepared our constitution as well,” KMSS President Bhasco De Saikia told reporters on August 22.

Earlier also the KMSS had announced the floating of a political party with the name Gana Mukti Sangram Samiti. But this time, they will give a new name to it.

Saikia said that they are expecting their leader Akhil Gogoi to be out from the jail by October and he will announce the name of the party and other details.

“Because of our non-compromising position, Akhil Gogoi is still in jail. By October, we hope Akhil Gogoi will be released. We trust the country’s judiciary. He will announce the name of the party after coming out of jail. The name of the party is finalised already,” Saikia said.

“All intellectual preparation for the new party, such as the work agenda and the constitution, is ready,” he said. Saikia also said that Akhil Gogoi will be their CM candidate.

Gogoi and some of his associates were put behind bars under the UA(P)Act by the NIA for their ‘involvement’ in violence during the anti-CAA movement in Assam in December 2019.

On August 19, AASU and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), another influential students’ organization of the state had come up with an advisory committee involving some of the most prominent personalities of the state to decide the roadmap of their future work.
