The Assam cabinet on August 27 approved setting up of a skill university at a cost of Rs 900 crore at Mangaldoi in Darrang district.

The Assam Skill Development University Bill was approved by the state cabinet which will enable setting up the university at a sprawling 100 bigha land at an investment of Rs 900 crore.

The cabinet also gave its nod for insurance coverage to journalists who fall victim to COVID-19. Insurance to the tune of Rs 50 lakh to journalists, home guards and all casual employees who succumb to COVID-19 infection while performing their duties was approved, an official statement informed on August 27.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, decided to increase the upper age limit for state government jobs for Group III and Group IV for two years so that unemployed youth can apply for jobs up to 40 years.

The meeting also gave its approval for the Assam Heritage Protection and Preservation Bill and amendment of the Assam MSME Bill. It was decided to take grant of Rs 116 crore from NABARD for completion of Dhansiri irrigation project, launched in 1975.

The Orunodoi Scheme for giving financial assistance to families under Rs 2 lakh of annual income was also approved.

The meeting further decided to keep the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council and Tiwa Autonomous Council out of the purview of the proposed Assam State Capital Region.
