With the overall COVID-19 tally as well as death toll increasing in Assam, another phase of lockdown could be imposed in the state if the situation does not improve.
Talking to reporters, Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna said: “If people do not wear masks and the number of cases continues to increase, the state government will be forced to impose lockdown. We do not want to declare lockdown again, but if the situation persists, the government will be forced to do so.”
Weekend lockdown is still in force in the state and decision for any revision will be taken before September 1, he added.
He pointed that though the overall COVID-19 caseload was less in Assam compared to other states, the death toll has been increasing at an accelerated rate since the last few days, and this was emerging as a cause of concern for the government.
Krishna appealed the people to wear masks at all times in public places and said the police will be instructed to strictly realise fine of Rs 1,000 if the people do not wear masks.
The overall COVID-19 tally in the state has increased 98,807 with detection of 2036 new cases in the last 24 hours.
The number of recovered patients has also increased to 79,307 with 2345 discharges on August 27. The death toll has climbed to 278, while number of active COVID 19 positive cases remained below 20,000.
