At least 11 candidates from the Northeast cleared the Civil Services Examination, 2019, with Aranyak Saikia from Assam securing the 59th rank. The result of the examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), was declared on August 4.

Out of 11 who cleared the examination from the region, five were from Assam, two each from Sikkim and Manipur and one each from Nagaland and Tripura.

Apart from Aranyak Saikia, Sizal Agarwal (112th rank), Nibedita Dutta (697th rank), Tapan Deka (766th rank) and Kishore Sutradhar (784th rank) cleared the examination from Assam. Nongjai Mohd Ali (188th rank) and Parikshit Thoudam (188th rank) were the rank holders from Manipur while Yangchen Doma Bhutia (677th rank) and Zenden Lingzerpa (794th rank) were the selected candidates from Sikkim. Richard Yanthan (133rd rank) from Nagaland was the only candidate clearing the examination from Nagaland while and Dhiman Chakma (722nd rank) from Tripura also cleared the examination, bringing laurels to the region.

Year 2017 witnessed the highest number of candidates clearing the civil services from the Northeast with 24 rank holders, followed by 13 in 2018.

Aranyak Saikia emerged as the topper from the region, who is also the son of former Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia. He had tasted success in this exam earlier as well. The 25-year-old, a 2017-batch IPS officer, is already serving in Karnataka cadre.

Out of the 5 candidates, who cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2019 from Assam, two were from Jorhat – Sizal Agarwal and Nibedita Dutta. Sizal is seemingly the only girl from the Marwari community to have passed UPSC Civil Services Examination from Assam.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal congratulated the successful candidates. Through a statement, Sonowal said that these successful candidates have brought laurels to the state by cracking the examination with their hard work, dedication and perseverance and their results would inspire other youths of the state to aim for Civil Services Examinations in right earnest. He also hoped that the successful candidates would render their services with full integrity and contribute towards the nation building process in their roles as administrators and bureaucrats.

In a tweet, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh congratulated the candidates clearing the examination. “Congratulations to all the successful candidates of UPSC Civil Services Examinations 2019, and the two young men from Manipur, Nongjai Mohd Ali of Khetrgao and Parikshit Thoudam of Uripok ranking 188 and 373 respectively. I wish them the very best in all their future endeavours,” he tweeted.

A total of 829 candidates cleared the civil services examination.
