After former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi stirred up the hornets’ nest by saying that BJP is planning to project former chief justice of India Ranjan Gogoi as the CM candidate in the Assembly elections in 2021, the former CJI has dismissed the speculation on August 23.

“I am not a politician and have no such ambition or intent. Nobody has mentioned any such possibility to me,” the former CJI told India Today in an interview.

Earlier on August 22, veteran Congressman Tarun Gogoi told reporters that as per his sources, the former CJI might be projected by the saffron party as the CM in the forthcoming elections in Assam.

“It is unfortunate that people do not understand the difference between a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha and a nominee of a political party elected to the House. I have consciously chosen to be a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha because it gives me the opportunity to air my views on issues of interest to me while retaining my independence. Does that make me a politician?” Ranjan Gogoi was quoted as saying in the interview.

Ranjan Gogoi, who retired as the CJI in 2019, was nominated in the Rajya Sabha soon after his retirement.

Assam BJP has also rubbished the speculation made by Tarun Gogoi. Assam BJP President Ranjeet Kumar Dass on August 23 told the media that such a statement is baseless.

Dass hinted that there is not one iota of truth in what the former CM had said.
