India: 60,963 test positive, 834 die in past 24 hrs

India’s single-day spike in COVID-19 cases yet again surpassed the 60,000 barrier on August 12 with the country reporting 60,963 cases in past 24 hours while 834 lost their lives in the same period.

With this massive spike, COVID-19 tally reached 23,29,639.

Highest daily recoveries of 56,110 were registered, taking the total number of cured and discharged to 16,39,599. The recovery rate rose to 70.38 per cent, as per the union health ministry update.

Currently, 6,43,948 cases are active pan India. The country conducted a total number of 7,33,449 tests during the previous day, which takes the cumulative total of tests till August 11 to 2,60,15,297.

The worst-hit Maharashtra has 1,48,860 active cases, followed by Andhra Pradesh 87,597, Karnataka 79,614, Tamilnadu 52,810 and Uttar Pradesh at 48,998.

National capital Delhi has 10,868 active cases while 8 people succumbed in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the number of global COVID-19 cases surpassed 20.2 million on August 12, according to Johns Hopkins University. The global case tally stood at 20,207,011 with 739,898 deaths and 12,460,381 recoveries. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of the new coronavirus, a pandemic on March 11.
