‘Informal classes’ for students of Class 12 and final year of three-year-degree course will resume in Assam from September 15, state Health and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed in Guwahati on August 29.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma said teachers of all government schools and colleges, who have completed their COVID-19 test will resume their duties from September 1, while extending the deadline for the test by 15 days to September 15.

He said for the first 15 days, the teachers will oversee the cleaning and sanitisation of the institutions, and extra money will be sanctioned for the cleaning purpose.

“From September 15 to September 30, purely on an experimental basis, we shall start ‘informal classes’ for students of Class 12 and of third year degree students. Teachers will ask the students to come in small groups and they can interact to clear any doubts. If there is any COVID-19 case reported, the process will be suspended at that place,” he added.

For students in the lower classes who have been coming to the schools routinely for taking ration under mid-day meal scheme since closure of schools, the minister said, these students will interact with their teachers when they come for the weekly ration and the teachers will hand them question papers for the next week while also scrutinising the previous week’s answer scripts in the presence of the student.

“The teachers will conduct the online classes from the schools and colleges. In case of private institutions, we cannot order them, it is in their discretion,” he added.

The minister further informed that in lieu of laptop computers given by the state government to star mark holders of Class 10 examinations, an amount of Rs 20,000 will be credited to the bank accounts of the students next month.
