A COVID-19 patient admitted at North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong died on August 7.

With the death of the 45-year-old person at NEIGRIHMS, the death toll related to COVID-19 in Meghalaya went up to six, while 17 new cases were detected taking the overall active cases to 594 as on August 8.

Health and Family Welfare minister, Alexander Laloo Hek, confirmed that a 45-year-old patient with chronic kidney complications, who had also tested positive for COVID-19, died at NEIGRIHMS on August 7.

Director of Health Services (MI) Aman War said that the death was due to COVID-19 pneumonia and the deceased was also suffering from diabetes.

Meanwhile, Hek informed that 17 new COVID-19 cases, including 12 civilians in East Khasi Hills district, two in North Garo Hills and three Border Security Force troopers in West Garo Hills, tested positive for COVID-19 on August 8.

“Twelve persons, including four civilians and one BSF personnel in East Khasi Hills, seven civilians in Ri-Bhoi and one person in West Jaintia Hills recovered from the disease, taking the number of recoveries in the state up to 423,” the health minister further informed.

With 453 active cases, East Khasi Hills is the most-affected district in the state followed by Ri-Bhoi with 65 cases and 31 cases in West Garo Hills.

Eighteen cases were reported from East Jaintia Hills, 15 in West Jaintia Hills, six in West Khasi Hills and two each South Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills.
